Problem reproducing the MgB2 superconduting gap plot

Post by betterman58 »

Dear EPW community,

I was trying to reproduce the plot of superconducting gap on the fermi surface following the turorial on the website. It seems that all the calculations are running fine until I plot the results in VESTA. Unlike the figure in the tutorial, I got a plot with spotted dots on the fermi surface and all the superconducting gap are blue which is unlike the tutorial where yellow gap is shown. Would you please tell me where did I do wrong? I'll post the epw.in I used and the figure I got from VESTA.

Very much appreciated for your help.

Regards,
Kevin

Re: Problem reproducing the MgB2 superconduting gap plot

Post by hpaudya1 »

Hi betterman58,

The plot in the website is for the fine k-mesh with 60x60x60, and fine q-mesh with 30x30x30. Please re-run your calculation with this mesh (also check the other parameters used if specified in the website), which should reproduce the plot.

Hi Hari,

Thanks very much for your reply. I tried to increase the k-mesh and q-mesh to 60*3 and 30*3, respectively, but then the phonon calculation may seem to take forever. I notice in your answer, you mentioned to increase "fine k-mesh", which I suppose to be the nkf* and nkq* commands in the epw.in file. That is to say, I can still keep using the nk* and nq* consistent with the previous scf.in and ph.in, while increase the nkf and nkq density, right? So the correct epw.in with respect to the specific section should look like the following:
nk1 = 12
nk2 = 12
nk3 = 12

nq1 = 6
nq2 = 6
nq3 = 6

mp_mesh_k = .true.
nkf1 = 60
nkf2 = 60
nkf3 = 60

nqf1 = 30
nqf2 = 30
nqf3 = 30

Hi Kevin,

Yes, for the fine mesh you are right.

Please keep the nk* = 6 (I see 12 in your last post).

Hi Hari,

I've been trying to repeat the epw calculations using the fine k and q grids as you suggested. But I still didn't get the desired SC gap plot on the fermi surface. I'm now attaching all the input files I used. Would you please have a look at them and tell me what might be the possible mistakes I've made.

Best regards,
Kevin

Re: Problem reproducing the MgB2 superconduting gap plot

Hi Kevin,

Could you share some output files/data? What is the value of the lambda? Did you try to plot lambda on FS? Did you import all files (wrt band) one by one?

Hi Hari,

Thanks very much for your consistent help. I've now solved the problem. The key is to keep all the kpoints grid the same in nscf.in epw.in and the fermi_gap.py/fermi_surf.py. My problem was that I used a less dense grid (20*3) in the epw.in, but forgot to change the kpoins grid density (60*3) of the two python scripts. Though the resolution of the SC gap plot on FS is not that good (attached), but at least the gap on the two MgB2 bands are distinguishable now.

Best regards,
Kevin
